Dogs in Snow and Winter Photo Sessions

Do you have a dog that loves to play in snow?

Dogs love snow for the same reasons as kids: because it’s fun to play with. According to Stanley Coren, a scientist and Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia and expert in canine psychology, the mind of a dog is very much like that of a two-year-old child. To your dog, just like to a child, the snow is a fun environment.

While you may prefer to cuddle up with a warm blanket and hot drink, go ahead and get out in the snow with your dog.  It will make his daily walk and play time so enjoyable, even if it is a bit cold out.

That’s also why it can be so much fun to have a dog photography session in the snow. The winter is always a wonderful time for a pet photo session with beautiful light, crisp white snow, and your dog having a blast in the snow. Lexi definitely loves the snow and we captured this cute photo of her playing with her ball on a snowy day.

Dogs in Snow Photo Sessions

If you got here because you were looking for cute pictures of dogs in snow, enjoy these! But if you are thinking of a snow photo session with your dog, read on.

I am occasionally able to book snow photo sessions in the Toronto area with just a few days notice when snow is forecast. But if you’re considering a winter session with your pooch, I do suggest that you get hold of me as soon as possible before the winter spots fill up, and let’s capture some fun, snowy images of your dogs!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when thinking of a winter dog photography session with Terri J Photography:

  • Be prepared to be flexible. If we schedule a session based on the forecast but it is bone-chillingly cold, we will have to reschedule. My fingers will not work the camera and you and your fur friends will not enjoy the experience.

  • Even if there is not a lot of the white stuff, don’t let that worry you. We will find lovely winter backdrops like tall dried grasses and red branches as you can see in the photo below of Bryson, a stunning Labrador cross.

  • Don’t worry about sitting on the snow and getting wet. I come fully prepared with a plastic sheet and white fluffy blanket to keep you nice and dry while sitting on the wet snow during the session. Moose, a gorgeous chocolate Labrador and his family are doing just that in this lovely winter scene below.

  • Dress your dog warmly if it is really cold. This applies especially to puppies and older dogs that may find it hard to control their body heat. Consider jackets that really do provide protection from cold and salt. Bentley, the adorable French Bulldog, was dressed in this cute red sweater for his photo session and because of his short little legs he needed it to keep his belly warm!

Meanwhile enjoy these photos which will give you an idea of the memories we can create that will warm your heart on a cold winters day!
