Keeping your dog safe during a photography session

A dog photography session is supposed to be enjoyable. But you may worry about your the well-being and safety of your precious pooch during the session.

If you work with a professional pet photographer they will be sure to keep safety a number one priority so you can relax and enjoy your session.   They should take all the necessary precautions to make sure your dog is never put in harms way in the pursuit of that amazing dog portrait you have dreamed of.

As a professional pet photographer in Toronto, I will take time to get to know your dog, and find out about any health or behaviour issues.  I will give you plenty of information ahead of time to help you know what to expect, and how to prepare for your dog’s photoshoot.

I will take a number of measures to ensure your dog’s well-being during his or her photoshoot.

1. Locations

During our pre-session consultation I’ll find out more about your dog and his/her special needs, if any. That will help me to suggest locations that are suitable,  whether that’s a short stroll in a familiar park, or a longer adventure on a local trail. If your dog is nervous or anxious in new places, we’ll shoot somewhere that is known to the dog and avoid crowded places.

2. Leashes

Ninety-nine percent of the sessions I shoot are with dogs on leash.  We keep them on for safety.  During the session I will ask you to hold the leash in a certain way so that I am able to remove it during photo editing. Even during the action shots, many people will opt to leave the leash on just in case the dog decides to go and explore. It is easier to catch him/her by the leash. But if the leash cannot be dropped for any reason, we will do the action shots with you running beside the dog if able, or not do those types of photos at all. There is no need to stress over removing the leash because your dog may run away or chase a squirrel.   I have it covered!

3. The dog’s comfort

I will never expect your dog to do something that is causing him/her stress or discomfort.  We may try certain poses and placements, but if your dog shows signs of stress we will abandon that spot or idea and move on. Sessions are relaxed with no time limits and no pressure. It doesn’t matter if your dog is a little nervous or excited, we will take as much time as we need, and use toys and treats to make your dog feel comfortable.

4. Dog Training

Having many years of dog training experience enables me to understand dog behaviour and recognize signs of stress or fatigue and we will take as many breaks as needed.

I hope that this post has given you some reassurance in working with me as your Toronto area dog photographer and that you can get beautiful images of your dog without compromising their wellbeing.
