The Beaches: Toronto's Ultimate dog-friendly haven

If you are looking for one of the most dog friendly neighbourhoods in Toronto, take a good look at the Beaches also known as just “The Beach” among residents,

Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Ontario, The Beaches neighbourhood in Toronto, is an idyllic haven for residents and visitors alike. With its charming streets, vibrant community spirit, and most importantly, its dog-friendly atmosphere, The Beaches stands out as a perfect destination for dog lovers.

From sandy shores and ample green spaces to a plethora of canine-friendly establishments, this neighbourhood offers a wealth of opportunities for both pets and their owners to enjoy a fulfilling and joyful lifestyle

  1. Beaches and Parks

As the name suggests, The Beaches neighbourhood is well known for its picturesque sandy beaches, making it a paradise for dogs and their owners.

Kew Beach and Woodbine Beach provide ample opportunities for your furry friends to frolic in the sand, splash in the waves, and meet other four-legged companions.

The Beaches is home to numerous parks and green spaces that cater to the needs of both dogs and humans. From the sprawling Ashbridges Bay Park to the lush greenery of Kew Gardens and Woodbine Park,  a 30 acre park that’s popular for outdoor events and home to many festivals throughout the year, you’ll find plenty of spaces to walk, run, and play with your canine companion. The Martin Goodman Trail, which runs along the waterfront, is a great place for dog walking and offers beautiful views of Lake Ontario.

The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant has a lot of green space around the building, where you can take your dog to roam around. Right near the plant is where the beach starts and many dog owners let their dogs off-leash here before the board walk starts. A word of warning, this area is not fenced in, so please make sure your pup has good recall!

2. Off-leash dog parks

These designated off-leash areas allow dogs to freely explore, exercise, and have a blast in a natural, waterfront setting.

Disclaimer:  This is not an endorsement of off-leash dog parks. But many people and dogs do enjoy them. At any dog park always use caution, know your dog and its level of training and recall, make sure the area is safe, the fencing is secure,  other dogs are friendly, your dog is not reactive and so on.

The Beaches boasts 3 great off leash areas for dogs

  • Kew Gardens features an off-leash area adjacent to the beach.

A word of warning: it’s not fully enclosed, with one border running along the water. Dogs can go into the water if they are adventurous enough to jump off the rocks. But there are many trees and shrubs for the dogs to explore and lots of space to romp around in.

  • Cherry Beach has a huge off leash area right on the lake so it is a great place to bring the dogs to swim. While there you can enjoy the views of Toronto city.

  • Silver Birch dog park is usually less busy than the other parks and again is a great place for the dogs to play freely and enjoy a swim in the lake. This is not fenced in so be careful and know your dog!

  • The Entire Woodbine beach ( seasonally). Perhaps the best off leash time for dogs is between November and April when and dogs are allowed to frolic entirely unhindered all over the beach.

3. Dog-Friendly Establishments

The Beaches neighbourhood prides itself on being a welcoming and inclusive community for our four-legged friends. Many local businesses, including cafes, restaurants, and shops, open their doors to dogs, making it easier for pet owners to spend quality time with their furry companions. From pet-friendly patios to water bowls and treats at the entrances, these establishments go the extra mile to make dogs feel at home.

Here are a few local establishments where your dog is welcome. It’s always a good idea to confirm with the specific establishments for their current policies regarding dogs.

  • 1. The Stone Lion Pub: This local pub is known to be dog-friendly and allows well-behaved dogs on their outdoor patio.

  • 2. The Remarkable Bean: This coffee shop on Queen Street East welcomes dogs on their outdoor patio and even offers dog treats.

  • 3. The Green Eggplant: This café on Queen Street East has an outdoor patio where dogs are welcome.

  • 4. Avling: While this brewery is not technically in The Beaches, its really close by and a great place to take your dog for a lovely patio brunch or dinner.

I’d advise you to contact these establishments or check their websites or social media pages to verify their current policies regarding dogs.

4. Local Pet Stores

One of the best pet stores in the Beaches is The Dog Market. They are one of the very few pet stores owned and operated entirely by residents of the community.

You’ll also find Global Pet foods as well as a Pet Valu for all your dog-related needs.

In addition, The Beaches is home to several grooming salons that offer a wide range of services to keep your furry friend healthy and happy.

As part of a blog circle, I collaborate with amazing pet photographers from around the world in weekly posts on set themes.  This week we spotlighted a great venue in our cities. Nicole Hrustyk, of Pawtraits by Nicole in Las Vegas, Nevada, shares some recent sessions in smaller locations.

I am a Toronto based Master Photographer specializing on-location pet photography including family and couples sessions with their beloved pets. My clients love that not only do they get digital photos from their session but credit for artwork to display in their home, or albums and desk displays to showcase their favourite pet and family photos.
