I am currently taking part in a 52 week photography challenge with a group of wonderful pet photographers. This week’s topic is “road warriors”. I am one of the Toronto based pet photographers for the Etobicoke Humane Society where I take photos of the dogs and cats that have been rescued from poor living conditions or in some cases surrendered by families that can no longer care for their pet.
Because many of these pets come from far and wide, I think of them as “road warriors”.
You would not believe the great distances some of these dogs have travelled to Toronto to find their forever home!
They are often sent by other rescue organizations, working together with the Etobicoke Humane Society, from as far away as Taiwan, Cayman Islands, Greece, Northern Ontario and Quebec. These dogs sure have travelled a long way! Most of them are loving and gentle and usually find a home rather quickly. Others may take a little longer and are often placed in a foster home until they are ready for adoption.
It is a little challenging taking photographs in a shelter setting. We are restricted to the shelter’s yard or indoor kennel area. The choice of setting or backdrop is not what a photographer would normally choose for a fine art image. So the pictures are not as creative and as artistic as I would otherwise like. But hopefully they aid in the adoption process.
Here are some of the dogs photographed this week, currently waiting for adoption.
The cats usually come from closer to home, but often do travel from other parts of Ontario to get to the shelter where they wait for a loving family to adopt them. Many have had a rough start to life - they are no less “road warriors” than the dogs who have travelled from distant lands!
Here are some photos of rescue cats taken this week at the Etobicoke Humane Society’s shelter.
If you are looking for a pet to add to your family, please consider adoption. Give a rescue dog or cat a new lease on life! As they say : “Adopt, don’t shop”.
As part of the 52 week challenge, Colleen of Simply Col Photography - for the love of photography and pound pups , has also written about Road Warriors. Why not head over there to read about her interpretation on the topic.
