Searching for the Best Dog Photographer in Toronto? These 10 points will help you!

Alright, fellow dog lovers of Toronto, let's talk about capturing those tail-wagging moments of you and your furry best friends. Of course I'm talking about dog photography, and not just any dog photography – I'm talking about finding the best dog photographer in the Toronto area.

So, what exactly does it mean to be the best, and how do you spot the crème de la crème?

First things first, let's clarify that being the best dog photographer isn't just about taking adorable pictures of pups (although that's a huge part of it).

  • It's about embracing the challenge of capturing a dog's personality, and spirit through the lens.

  • It's about documenting that special bond that people share with their dogs, creating art with every click of the shutter.

  • Toronto's best dog photographer is one who knows that a picture of a dog isn't just a picture – it's a memory, a feeling, and a piece of your heart captured in time.

And that takes me to my next point.

It’s easy to call oneself the best. But, “the best” is indeed subjective!

Remember, what is “the best” to you may not be “the best” to another dog loving Mom or Dad.

So, what should you look for when you're searching for the best dog photographer in Toronto? Here are 10 points to help you make that perfect choice for your dog and your family.

The photographer's website and initial contact will help you assess the following points:

1. Crucial phone call: Does the photographer schedule a phone call with you when you make initial contact? A chat with a photographer is super important when you're researching. It's a real conversation that helps you understand each other way better than just emails. It offers the chance to ask questions, clarify doubts, and share specific details that might be overlooked in emails or on-line questionnaires.

As for the photographer, expect them to ask questions about your dog!  It is important for them to inquire about any unique characteristics, behaviour traits, or preferences your dog has. This ensures that the photographer can tailor their approach, creating a comfortable and conducive environment to capture the best shots of your beloved pet.  If they don’t question you - keep away!

2. A Good Portfolio: A solid portfolio isn't just about having cute photos. Look for variety – portraits, action shots, candid moments, and dogs of all shapes and sizes. A diverse portfolio indicates a photographer who's versatile and experienced.

3. Technically Proficient: Photography is more than just pressing a button. A qualified dog photographer knows their equipment inside out, understands lighting like a pro, and can adapt to any situation to capture that *wow* shot. Checking out their portfolio will give you a good idea if the photographer will be a good fit.

4. Creativity: The best dog photographers have a creative eye that surpasses the standard poses. They know how to experiment with angles, compositions, and settings to make you and your furry friend stand out.

It's important to consider the photographer’s style and the type of images they create. Every photographer has their own unique approach and aesthetic, and it's important to choose a photographer whose style resonates with you and your furry friend.

Take a look at some of my photos and you will get a good idea of my style of photography - classic, colourful and with dreamy backgrounds. My portfolio features a diverse range of pet photography, from candid shots to posed portraits.

This adorable Yorkie, Simon, really enjoyed his photo session - just look at that smile!

5. Understanding Dog Behaviour:  The best dog photographers should have some experience in dog training, be able to understand subtle cues like body language, facial expressions, and tail movements and be able to anticipate the signs of stress or anxiety as well as curiosity and playfulness. They will also understand how best to deal with with reactive dogs so that those dogs may also have the privilege of a professional photoshoot with their adoring Pawrents.

Check the photographers About page or elsewhere on their website to see if they mention this knowledge and training.

6. Proficiency in Editing: In the world of dog photography, being able to tweak and tune your photos is seriously important. Editing photos is like an artist's canvas where you can brush up and beautify your shots.

Love that photo of a lively pup on a leash, but hate the distraction that the leash provides? No worries! With proficient editing, your photographer can magically erase the leash and let the pup's personality shine. Ensure your chosen photographer is both willing to spend the time and is able to do this!

Does the photographer make the most out of your photos from the camera? Tinkering with lighting, colours, and tones turns your photos into a real masterpiece that tells each dog's unique story.  Long story short, editing turns plain photos into timeless portraits that'll make tails wag.

Candid and posed shots are part of a session

7. Positive Reviews: In the digital age, word of mouth spreads like wildfire. Check out reviews and testimonials from other dog owners.

If tails are wagging in approval, you're on the right track.

The next few points you may not be able to assess until you actually meet the photographer but you can do so through referrals and reviews.

But first take a look at another photo from Simon’s session with him and his adoring mom.

Photos showing the love between the dog and his owner are important too! I bet you have many photos of your pooch but not too many with you in the frame!

8. Passion for Pooches: You can't fake love for dogs, and with the best dog photographers their adoration is evident. They get down on all fours, play fetch with their subjects, and exude genuine love and excitement in every session.

9. Chemistry: Dogs have a sixth sense about people, and that goes for photographers too. The best ones have an uncanny ability to connect with dogs instantly, making them comfortable enough to showcase their true selves.

10. Patience and Treats: Dogs can be unpredictable. A great dog photographer has the patience of a saint and a pocket full of treats and tricks to keep their four-legged subjects engaged and focused.

I love this photo for a framed wall print!

So, what's the essence of being one of the best dog photographers in Toronto? It's about being more than just a photographer – it's about being a canine storyteller. It's about capturing those moments that remind us why we adore our furry friends so much – their boundless joy, their quirky personalities, and the unconditional love they shower upon us.

Whether your pup is a posh pet poodle, a high-energy husky, or a laid-back lap dog, the best dog photographer in Toronto has the ability to capture their true essence in every click.
